Scratching the Surface with Sgraffito: An Introduction to Surface Decoration with Moth
In this two part workshop, we will be learning the ancient art of sgraffito as well as some complimentary finishing techniques. All skill levels encouraged and welcome— no drawing skills required!
Sgraffito is a foundational technique of surface decoration and means literally “to scratch.” In ceramics, it often refers to the process of scratching into a surface layer of a clay body to reveal a contrasting layer beneath.
In the first session we will use various tools to make marks on clay tiles. In the second session we will learn finishing techniques with glazes and washes to add that extra special something.
Tiles will be provided for a project to follow along with the class. Participants are encouraged to also bring a clay project or two they’re working on. Bring a printed image reference or a word that inspires you.
